Marijuana is currently a hot topic within the states. 33 out of the 50 states have passed laws to allow for medical marijuana use. Missouri was added to that list at the end of 2018, which will give persons suffering from chronic and debilitating medical conditions an opportunity to seek alternative help. Myth 1. Medical marijuana use is illegal in Joplin, MO
Medical cannabis became legal in Missouri as of December 2018. The Department of Health and Senior Services began accepting applications for qualifying patients for medical marijuana use in Missouri July 4, 2019.
Myth 2- Anyone can receive physician recommendation for medical marijuana
- There are select conditions which are eligible for medical marijuana treatments in Missouri, including:
- Cancer
- Epilepsy
- Glaucoma
- Migraines
- Chronic severe, persistent pain or persistent muscle spasms
- Debilitating psychiatric disorders
- HIV or AIDS
- Chronic medical conditions otherwise treated by prescription medications that may be habit-forming
- Any terminal illness
- Other chronic, debilitating, or other medical conditions at a physician’s discretion
It is important to talk to your doctor about what qualifies you for medical marijuana treatment.
Myth 3- Medical marijuana patient licensing is not affordable
Each Patient/Primary Caregiver ID card costs $25 and is valid for 1 year. There is an additional registration fee of $25. For patients interested in growing their own supply of up to 6 flowering plants they can purchase a Patient Cultivation Card for $100. Caregivers will also be able to obtain the same cultivation card.

Myth 4- Medical marijuana has no side effects
The use of cannabis can have a variety of side effects depending on form and variety. The drug is known to inhibit judgment and coordination. Patients are strongly recommended not to medicate around children or operate any type of machinery or vehicle. WebMD reports minors receiving marijuana treatments may be affected developmentally.
Other side effects may include:
- Depression
- Dizziness
- Rapid heartbeat
- Hallucinations
- Low blood pressure
Medical marijuana can be a better option to other strong pain killers, which may cause long-term organ damage and other serious side effects.
Myth 5- Medical marijuana is only smoked
Medical Marijuana can take many forms including:
- Pills
- Topical applications
- Oral solutions
- Dried leaves and buds
- Oils for vaporizing
Your doctor can help you decide which for is best for you. Depending on your needs, each form can provide different solutions. Some medical marijuana can provide symptom relief without the mind-altering effects of recreational marijuana.
